Seasonal eating

With “a bunch” of birthdays to celebrate during a recent get-together with relatives, preparing the cake also became a family affair. “T”, mother-in-law and guest Upper Cut Cakes gal, baked a family-favourite buttermilk carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, while Elanor piped and decorated. Given the multi-birthday occasion and the type of cake, what could be more appropriate adornments than walnuts and “a bunch” of almond paste “carrots”?

The carrots baked into the cake came straight from the in-laws’ home garden, so these hand-molded decorative versions were shaped into varying sizes with extra long root tails and a light scuffing of cocoa “dirt”.

For added authenticity, real carrot greens were used to top the faux vegetables.
