A treat from the past

Growing up in Maine (U.S.) surrounded by whoopie pies on store shelves and bake sale tables, Upper Cut Gal "E" never realized that these 'inverted cakes' were a regional recipe until she met her future husband, who hails from the Midwest and had never before eaten or even seen one. Times have changed, however, with whoopie pies recently making their appearance in several UK food stores and on countless blogs from bakers outside of northeastern U.S. Perhaps due to this renewed attention, or as a sentimental nod to childhood, or simply caught up in the (Halloween) spirit of autumn, this morning found "E" in the kitchen baking whoopie pies for the first time in more than 20 years. Not the original chocolate cake version, but instead two mini-sized but deliciously moist spiced pumpkin cake cookies joined together with a creamy vanilla filling. Yum.
